Children in Distress Network (CINDI) has received a donation of 78 pairs of School Shoes from MAKRO SA. These shoes were handed over by Mr Jay Soobramoney, the Marketing Manager of MAKRO Pietermaritzburg.Rekha Nathoo, the director of CINDI said ‘’We would like to thank MAKRO for their kind donation which will make a huge difference in the lives of Orphan and Vulnerable Children,’’

With a huge amount of families in KZN affected by terminal and critical Illness, Poverty and Unemployment, most household income is focussed on basic needs. Within this scenario school uniforms and supplies are not seen as a basic need for a vulnerable child. Adding to this the high amount of Child Headed Households where buying school uniforms and supplies are not even a choice or an option.

School Uniforms are standard in all public South African Schools and children who cannot afford to buy uniforms are often victimized by their peers and these children end up feeling too embarrassed and humiliated to go to school without a uniform.

The RIGHT TO EDUCATION is every child’s right in South Africa and not having uniforms and school supplies is a barrier to Vulnerable and Orphaned Children in accessing education. There is no greater travesty than children being denied education, not because they’re unwilling, but because they cannot afford their books, the necessary school supplies and uniforms.

CINDI has made a commitment to assist these learners through our Singatha Project. The aim is to raise funds and donations to build up a resource base of school supplies and uniforms for these children. Once we have raised an effectual mass of both, we send a call out to our members, who all work in vulnerable communities with children, to send us a list of children who need the uniforms and supplies and donate what we have received from you to them.

The generosity of the public has allowed us to sponsor over 1000 children to date. We would like to increase this number in 2017 with your help. MAKRO has helped us make a good start but we continue to need your help.

  • We would appreciate Donations of new and gently used uniforms and supplies as well. The uniform sets are made up of: Boys and girl’s black shoes of any size, white shirts, grey jerseys, grey shorts, skirts and trousers and school socks are all welcome (ideally, each child should receive two sets).
  • You could also help the children by donating school supplies such as, Back packs, pencils, erasers, scissors, glues, rulers, pencil sharpeners, crayons and educational books.

For further Enquires please contact the Director, Ms Rekha Nathoo on 033 345 7994 or via email on director@cindi.org.za for further information regarding donations or gifts in kind. Your help is needed to enable these children to access their basic right to education. As always we thank you for caring enough to make a difference.
